ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

My husband Chris and I live in a cabin-style home next to the National Forest in the beautiful Cascade Mountain area of the Pacific Northwest. Our two grown sons and granddaughter live nearby and we try to see them as often as we can. We also have two 're-homed' pets to make life more interesting-our yellow Labrador retriever Audrey and a Maine coon cat named Harry.

My writing studio is in a separate building next to our courtyard (a garden area that's off limits to the voracious deer). The window behind my desk looks out into the Ponderosa pine forest, where I see deer, squirrels, rabbits, and an occasional raccoon. The other windows in my office overlook the courtyard which is frequented by numerous hummingbirds in the summertime-one August evening we counted nearly fifty of the little hummers.

Kay's Comments:  A good read!  I was enthralled after the first chapter. I kept trying to guess the outcome but was wrong until just before the end. There is a bit of humor thrown in to keep the story from too overwhelming but  the events in this contemporary suspense are heavy. The romance is a bit forced at times but still interesting.

 

This Quilts of Love series has turned out a wonderful collection of a variety of times and genre within fiction. The covers are beautiful too.

She is now a counselor at “Uni High School” in Champaign, Illinois. She is the loving mother of Havah Noelle (our first grandchild!) and Noah Zion, our youngest grandchild. The Jackson family also includes a Cambodian foster daughter, Samen Sang, who has four children.

We live in Evanston, Illinois, where for twenty-seven years we were part of Reba Place Church, a Christian church community. We are now members of a multi-racial congregation in the Chicago area.

Kay's Comments: I enjoyed reading The Guardian though it's pace is slow and methodical. Many would find it a relaxing summer read with a bit of mystery and romance.  I find the description of the story (above) which was supplied by the publishers, to be a bit misleading. I expected the book to focus on the loss and recovery of the young girl's identity; however, that is taken care of fairly early in the book. The remainder, and most of the book, is the story of the interaction with the girl's family with Jodi along with the plight of two widowed Amish.

It’s quite appropriate that the release date of this book falls on November 1st. Just as Halloween leads to All Saints Day*, The Breath of Dawn moves us through a tale of evil to one of redemption, purpose and love.

Morgan Spencer, a King Midas professionally, is a tragic hero in his personal life. The book opens with Morgan grieving the death of his wife. His saving grace comes in the form of his infant daughter, Livie.

Livie is an adorable bundle of cuddly; pleasantly mixed with joy and challenge. It’s love at first glimpse!

In walks Quinn Riley, a woman in danger. In turn, she becomes an endangerment to Morgan’s fragile peace and eventually, his very existence.

Breath of Dawn is a stand-alone novel; however, it is the third in a series that chronicles Morgan’s story. The prequels, Rush of Wings and Still of Night, are two of my favorites. I was elated to be able to continue reading Morgan’s story. (My thanks to the author!)

As in all her novels, Heitzmann presents realistic, flawed characters. Her books draw me in a few do. This romantic suspense story is among the best of the best.

Accidentally Amish Barbour Books (October 1, 2012)   by Olivia Newport

Kay's Comments: Love this book!! Love this author's writing! (See what she thinks of YOU in "About The Author" below.)  I liked this book enough that I went out and bought another title by the same author. Enjoyed that one too!

 

The story flows back and forth from historical to contemporary. The blend of the two worlds, both Amish/English and History/Contemporary, sparks contemplation unique to this novel. This is one of the best of today's popular tales of Amish meets English.

What can I say? Read this book and decide for yourself. Hey, it is an enjoyable read! Go for it!

I live in Tulsa, though I was born in Mississippi. I moved to the Sooner State when I was seventeen and met my soul mate and best friend not long after. I love homemade tacos, shoes, and romance novels–not necessarily in that order. I’m a big fan of country music, a staunch proponent of saving the Oxford comma, and I’m shamefully obsessed with all things Harry Potter.

I believe that God is love. I guess that’s why I adore romances.

I have always been intrigued with the Amish culture, their gentle ways and slower-paced lifestyle. (And I love, love, love the fact that they stay married for their lifetime.) But until recently I never thought to blend this interest with my penchant for romance. Okay, okay, I’m a bit old-fashioned and even enjoy the gender roles that are present in this culture. I love to cook and take care of my family. Yes, that’s me June Cleaver with a laptop.

I dislike people trying to convince me to read the Twlight series (I’ll get to it or I won’t, either way I’m good with it), gratuitous violence, and strawberry ice cream. (I know I’m alone on this last one, and again, I’m good with it.)

Favorite movies–(besides HP) French Kiss, Maid of Honor, A Lot Like Love, Just Married, and Sweet Home Alabama. Oh, and Miss Congeniality, Sabrina (both versions) and a 1940′s movie called Dear Ruth. If you haven’t seen it, you should! A-dorable. Anything with Doris Day and most all of Marilyn’s and Audrey’s.

I started writing my first novel during my last year of surgery training at UK. I was a chief resident, and started writing Stainless Steal Hearts in a call room at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Lexington. It was a crazy time to write! I had a very demanding schedule, often spending days and nights in the hospital. I had two sons at that time, and I recognized the wisdom in my wife's urging: "Now doesn't seem the right time for this dream."

My experience as a writer is far from typical. Having received my formal training in biology and chemistry and medicine, my only preparation for a writing career was a love for reading. The longest thing I'd written before my first novel was a term paper in undergraduate school. My first novel was accepted by Crossway Books and published in 1994, and it wasn't until after I had FOUR published novels that I even opened a book of instruction about the craft of writing fiction. This is not what I recommend to others! Yes, I was successful, but I was bending the "rules" without knowing it. I had a natural talent for plotting, but I realize my initial success may have stunted my growth as a writer. I'd have made faster progress if I'd have gone to the fiction teachers sooner.

I have three sons: Joel, Evan, and Samuel. Look closely in all of my books and you'll see them there. My lovely wife, Kris, provides the basic composition for all those beautiful, athletic, dedicated women in my novels.

Harvest of Grace

I've never met a book by author Cindy Woodsmall that I didn't like. This one is no exception.

The author does what she does best. She illustrates the conflicts of living Old Order Amish in a modern world while also drawing in the reader to fall in love with the characters and their story.

In Harvest of Grace, both Sylvia and Aaron are looking for new starts. Sylvia needs to leave home to pursue her dream of tending a dairy herd. Aaron is returning home after fighting his addiction in rehab. His ultimate goal is to leave the farm. Hers is to stay.

Can they reconcile their differences as their worlds collide? Finding out is a great read full of tension, conflict and struggling romance.

While this is a stand alone book but is best read as the third and last book in the Ada's House series. All the characters I grew to love in the first two in the series make appearances and continue their story.

I highly recommend not only this book but the entire Ada's House series.

Kathryn Cushman is a graduate of Samford University with a degree in pharmacy, but all her life she knew that she wanted to write a novel “some day”. For her, “some day” came in 2003, when she started writing and never looked back.

Her first two manuscripts remain firmly ensconced in the back of her closet (the dust bunnies tell her they really are terrific!). Her third attempt became her first published novel.

A Promise to Remember and Leaving Yesterday were both finalists for the American Christian Fiction Writers Carol Award, and Waiting for Daybreak was a finalist in Women’s Fiction for the Inspirational Reader’s Choice Award.

Kay's Comments: I liked this book!  It's a much romance as mystery. I didn't feel the fear of a thriller but there was suspense. It provides insights into the Old Order Mennonite thinking and the way it has evolved over time.  It's just a good read!
