Mark won’t claim he has done it all in the world of publishing, but he has packed boxes, edited manuscripts, made sales calls, created marketing plans, directed design and illustration, started companies, consulted, agented the works of others, and written advertising and catalog copy. He’s authored, compiled, and ghost written books that have landed on an array of bestsellers lists and sold millions of copies. His first ghost writing project, The Wal-Mart Way, was done for Don Soderquist, Sam Walton’s longtime right-hand man.

In early 2012 he put on a new hat as a fiction author. Kay's Comments:  Harry Kraus is a master of mystery writing!  If you are in the medical field or just interested in medicine, you will absolutely love this book. If you are not interested in medicine, you will still love this mystery.  It's a win-win for readers!  Go for it!

A Word from Harry:

I started writing my first novel during my last year of surgery training at UK. I was a chief resident, and started writing Stainless Steal Hearts in a call room at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Lexington. It was a crazy time to write! I had a very demanding schedule, often spending days and nights in the hospital. I had two sons at that time, and I recognized the wisdom in my wife's urging: "Now doesn't seem the right time for this dream."

My experience as a writer is far from typical. Having received my formal training in biology and chemistry and medicine, my only preparation for a writing career was a love for reading. The longest thing I'd written before my first novel was a term paper in undergraduate school. My first novel was accepted by Crossway Books and published in 1994, and it wasn't until after I had FOUR published novels that I even opened a book of instruction about the craft of writing fiction. This is not what I recommend to others! Yes, I was successful, but I was bending the "rules" without knowing it. I had a natural talent for plotting, but I realize my initial success may have stunted my growth as a writer. I'd have made faster progress if I'd have gone to the fiction teachers sooner.

I have three sons: Joel, Evan, and Samuel. Look closely in all of my books and you'll see them there. My lovely wife, Kris, provides the basic composition for all those beautiful, athletic, dedicated women in my novels.

Somewhere along the way, our own children grew up! Son Julian is Director of Experience Design for the Alder Planetarium in Chicago where he “provides the experience of exploring space” for visitors. He has two sons, Liam Isaac and Elijah David. Daughter Rachel graduated from Eastern Mennonite University and after working in the field of rape-crisis prevention went on to earn a Masters Degree in counseling from the University of Illinois. She is now a counselor at “Uni High School” in Champaign, Illinois. She is the loving mother of Havah Noelle (our first grandchild!) and Noah Zion, our youngest grandchild. The Jackson family also includes a Cambodian foster daughter, Samen Sang, who has four children.

We live in Evanston, Illinois, where for twenty-seven years we were part of Reba Place Church, a Christian church community. We are now members of a multi-racial congregation in the Chicago area.

Kay's Comments: While a stand alone novel, this is the third in a series. It's nice to visit with some old friends while getting to know some new ones, however, if you pick this up without having read the others, you will not be at a disadvantage.

I enjoyed the first two a great deal but haven't finished this one yet. This one promises to be as good as the others so I'm excited! Who can't love it when the man on the cover looks like the main love interest from last season's TV show The Bachelorette?! The one who got away....

Kay's Comments: I liked this book!  It's a much romance as mystery. I didn't feel the fear of a thriller but there was suspense. It provides insights into the Old Order Mennonite thinking and the way it has evolved over time.  It's just a good read!

Kay's Comments:  Quirky and fun mystery with attitude!  Your face will crack a smile and a snort as you read the zany dialogue. The exception is the prologue which, like any good mystery, demands a murder.

Don is one of the original members of the STATLER BROTHERS, the most award-winning act in the history of country music. He and his brother and two friends began singing in their hometown of Staunton, Virginia when Don was only fourteen years old. I deviated from that on this posting because author is the multi-talented Don Reid of Statler Brothers fame. Yes, all the authors listed on this blog are important but I have a bit of preference for this author. You see, I live in Harrisonburg, Virgina, not far from the home of the Statler brothers. Our daughter (how is now 24 years old) loved them and thier music as a child. I also love reading stories set in an area I love so much. Oh, by the way, the book is great!  lol

But today their small town is plagued by a maniac who finds sick pleasure in hurting animals. Jonah fears the acts will escalate to humans. Is this the threat of a cult, a stranger or someone who has been hiding in their midst?

Set in a small town in Colorado, this contemporary mystery and romance will keep you searching for answers until the last page… and then some. I found myself pondering the many facets of this multi-layered novel for quite some time. This is the sign of a great parable, a story that parallels and reveals the nature of our lives.


This book is a keeper. As an instructor of psychology at the university level, I can see using this as a text not only for book clubs but also for psychology or English classes.


Highly recommended!
