Kay's Comments:  I never saw it coming!! Many twists and turns along the way. If you haven't read this book wait until Oct. 1, 2014 so you can read the next book in the series right away. 

Great storyline! From the opening scene to the end, you will be amazed at how things go in this novel. Quite impressive. The end is totally unexpected; actually, most of it is unexpected.  I ordered the next book in the series today!  (Updated on 9/21/14)

I am a stay at home mother on a tiny little farm with a fixer-upper house. As much as I love writing and reading about homesteaders, I am so glad I’m a homesteader during an era with modern grocery stores to take up for my slack. I am an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher by trade, and I still work occasionally in that field along with being my church’s financial secretary and writing novels.

My husband and I have been married since 2001 and have a daughter and two little boys. My husband shares my fascination with traditional living except for being more hands on. He loves blacksmithing, knife smithing, traditional archery, hunting, etc. Generally whatever a mountain man does, he does it or has or wants to attempt it. He comes in handy for research! And of course, the rest of the family gets involved. I have my own blackpowder rifle, named Calvin, that my husband made for me. And I’m pretty sure my daughter is probably one of very few her age who can instruct adults how to shoot a longbow properly. The boy digs random holes in my yard to make “cement” with dirt and water making our yard a tripping hazard. The baby does what babies do.

Kay's Comments: Marvelous!  Elizabeth Camden writes not just novels, but good literature. Within the backdrop of an intriguing time in history, she conveys a complicated tale of love, murder and survival.  The storyline swings from a time of opulence to total destruction. As a reader, I could almost smell the smoke and hear the bells of alarm.

 

The characters grow and change as the story moves forward. The lead female characters are strong though imperfect, overcoming great adversity. Though Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) was not recognized as such at the time, one character fights through PTSD in order to help many.  The love of Zack for Mollie is a bit strange but adds a somewhat wicked excitement. The Christian aspect of the novel is not always overt but still there.

 

A compelling read! Be advised not to start near bedtime unless you are prepared to stay up all night reading!

Kay's comments:  This is the third and final book in a series. The basic premise of triplets separated at birth provides an interesting setting, especially in historical fiction as there is no internet to speed a search. Catherine has to become a detective to find her sisters.

 

I read the first and third books in the series. I found them to be enjoyable and relaxing reads. Sit back and prop your feet up for an adorable story.

Kay's Comments: Wonderful story!  Icecutters?! I found the story of this dangerous, laborious  occupation  a fascinating backdrop to a well told historical tale. Tracie Peterson's books have a depth that resounds with the authentic complexities of human nature.  I found myself aching for not only the main characters troubles but also feeling for the protagonist's trials. The tensions of the characters lives kept me reading, not wanting to miss anything. This novel subjects the reader to the realities of human nature while revealing a forgiving, loving God. A worthy read.

Jen grew up in the small town of St. Clairsville, Ohio, where she spent an idyllic childhood riding her purple spider bike, ice-skating on a little pond and reading Nancy Drew and Trixie Beldon books in her tree house. High School was, surprisingly enough, fabulous as Jen spent time with her girlfriends. She headed off to college with no idea of what she wanted to be when she grew up, but settled on pursuing a career in fashion because she thought it sounded glamorous. Her parents thought she’d lost her mind, but they resigned themselves to her choice and after earning a BA degree in Clothing and Textiles, Jen set off to take the fashion world by storm, only to discover retail was certainly not the glamorous career she’d imagined it would be. She moved to Buffalo, New York to take a job in the buying office of a large department store, learning all there was to know about cookware, which again, was hardly glamorous, especially to a girl who did not have a knack for cooking. She met her future husband, Al, a few months after taking this job and eight months later, they were married. After moving into management at another department store and working that for a few years, the company went out of business and Jen decided she’d had enough. One year later her son was born and Jen hung up her heels for good and concentrated on being a mom.

She began dabbling in writing when her son, then in elementary school, said he liked her made up stories as much as those in his books. It was then that she fired up the computer and never looked back.

Kay's comments:  I love this book! While romance is part of the storyline, there is a deeper story of love to be found. The two main characters, who are Amish, explain how their love for God and their fellow man calls them to  join the Civil War.  For me, it is an example how individuals can know God and express it in different ways.

While I thought I knew a good bit about the civil war, I was amazed at how much I learned. Personally, shorter descriptions of the battles would suited me just fine. At few points the storyline drags but it is worth the investment of time to keep going.

He has published several novels and short story collections in Canada, and has been short-listed for a number of awards. Kay's Comments: A romantic comedy describes this book well. Though full of laughable thoughts, the romancis tension is high. This the third book in this seriess, this book would be better understood if numbers one and two were read first.
